Summary: The objective of the study has been to investigate if and how far analysis of spatial structure of a neighbourhood layout can help us grasp its functional implications, and to develop a comprehensive method for study of housing layouts. In part 1 a method, Space Syntax Analysis, is applied to the description of the plan pattern of a case neighbourhood, the Skintbo housing area in Göteborg. Part 2 presents the Swedish standards for playground planning and previous research. Part 3 consists of three papers discussing the issue of the relation between architecture and social sciences. These papers are: 'The neighbourliness of the neighbourhood units', 'The shape of residential areas - a social issue', and 'The neighbourhood unit - a social mould?
